Top lock security tips from mobile locksmiths

Posted on: 3 December 2015

Locksmiths are experienced when it comes to gaining entrance into a house whether it is as a result of stolen or misplaced keys. They also see the how easy it can be for intruders to gain entrance into a building by utilising different tools and methods. Therefore, they are in a great position to give the average householder advice on how to bolster the security of their locks and entrances.  Here are some of those tips.

Install a deadbolt

When homeowners ask mobile locksmiths on the best way to boost their security, the most common answer is to install a deadbolt on their front door if they do not have one already. These are extremely reliable in terms of household security as they extend a steel bolt into the door jamb of a door frame, which prevents intruders from gaining easy access to the house.

Another factor to consider is having a deadbolt within arm's reach of a window or a glass pane. Intruders can simply smash the glass, stick their hand in and open the door. This is why you should always get a deadbolt that needs a key. You may also consider adding a second deadbolt towards the bottom of the door, which is out of reach from any glass panes.

Just like any types of product, there are good brands and poor ones, so you should always consult a locksmith in order to choose and install a deadbolt. They have experience on knowing what specific deadbolt will maximise the security of your property.

Be careful when you install your own locks

While it is perfectly okay to install your own locks, you need to be 100 percent confident that they are installed correctly and will provide the necessary security and protection from intruders. You do not need to get a locksmith to install a lock for you if you are able to do it yourself, but it is always a good idea to get one to check that the lock has been perfectly installed. This will provide peace of mind for both you and your family.

Hiding places

Many people hide a key somewhere outside of their house so that they will be able to gain entry if they have accidentally locked themselves out or they have lost their keys.

A lot of people leave these spare keys in the most obvious of places, such as under the door mat. Burglars will easily find the spare key if that is the case and will be able to gain entry to your property with no hassle.

If you are set on hiding a key, keep it well away from the door and in an obscure hiding place. Otherwise, you should leave a spare key with a trustworthy neighbour.
